Puppy Warranties?!?

So I was driving around Blacksburg the other day actually listening to local radio instead of my XM and I heard a commercial for Zooquatic Pets.  Now in case you aren’t from the area, or aren’t aware, Zooquatic recently started selling puppies.  At first I thought Oh that’s gonna be cuutteee! Then I found out they are puppy mill puppies.  Now I’m all about knowing what kind of breed you want and if you want to go to a dog breeder and pay for one that’s fine.  Most dog breeders properly care for their dogs and aren’t using them strictly for profit.  I am totally against puppy mills. Honestly, I’d rather get a dog from a shelter that needs a home over any breeder dog or pet store dog, but that’s not always possible for people to do due to size of home, children, etc and compatibility with the dogs available.  At anyrate, having been in their store over a month ago I saw the puppies they had there.  They had a cute black pug, some lil chihuahua looking dog and 2 others.  Though they were adorable, they had maybe a foot by foot space in a weird triangulated space in a glass circle cut into triangles for each dog.  I looked on the website and those dogs are still available, have been there since June 11th…so those poor things have been living in a triangle with no real care or love for over 2 months now. WTF?! This wouldn’t be an issue if they didn’t sell these puppies.  We have several shelters in our area, and unfortunately I believe a good portion of them are forced to put down animals every day because this area is just overburdened with abandoned animals.
So tell me why we need this puppy mill selling when we’ve got probably over at least 50 dogs in shelters in the area?
But back to my original point…so I’m driving and they advertise these puppies and give them a 3 year warranty. Ummmm WHAT?!  So does that mean if my dog gets sick, poops on the rug too much or bites me that in year 2 I can bring it back?  To what, have it sent to a kill shelter and put down? ‘Cause you know Zooquatic won’t be trying to resell that poor dog.  I think it’s ridiculous to put a warranty on a dog.  You cannot predict whether a dog will get sick, you can train properly most dogs to go outside for the bathroom and to not bite, but there’s really always a chance they will turn on you albeit a tiny percentage if raised right.  So I think it’s despicable that they’re putting warranties on these puppies lives.  You can’t go out and put a 3 year warranty on a baby - oh well if lil Johnny doesnt potty train quick enough or learn to talk, walk and chew solids fast enough for ya, just return him to the hospital within 3 years and we’ll hook you up with another child. WTF?!  I’ve never understood what makes innocent helpess animal’s lives less valuable than a human.  Obviously sure if I had to pick between a human and an animal in a fire, unfort. I’d pick the human in most cases, but generally speaking to me an animal deserves 100% good treatment.  I can’t watch those animal rescue shows on TV cause it makes me wanna drive to these people’s houses and beat the shit out of them and cage them up with no water for weeks on end til their hair mats to the cage door.

So yeah I’m ranting because I think it’s fucked up that they put warranties on dog’s lives, are selling puppy mill puppies, and are proud of it.  End this bullshit, don’t shop at Zooquatic, we’ve got another pet store in the area over by where Beamer’s used to be, go there.  Don’t buy puppy mill puppies, even if they are damn cute, go adopt a shelter dog, or at least go to a reputable breeder. Done my animal rights rant. :-P

Media Mania

So after a quick drive around campus today out of boredom, I already noticed a bunch of news vans camping out.  It’s definitely irritating to me that these people are coming back to film 1.) the official ceremony of the new memorial in front of Burruss tomorrow 2.) the students returning to classes.  This town has been through plenty since April 16th, and I think having to deal with returning to classes has to be enough, but to add on having cameras in your face and reporters trying to get the scoop on the way to class, I think I’d flip on someone.  We’re not an exhibit.  Yeah it happened here, it totally sucked - I don’t think anyone can argue that.  But overall, most people are dealing well.  Sure I think there’s still going to be some backlash, and in fact I’d venture to say it could get a little worse before better.  I read an article in the Roanoke Times about drinking, smoking, drug use, suicides, etc. post major events such at 9/11, Columbine and I believe the Oklahoma City Bombings.  It does increase.  But is anyone really surprised at that fact? I’m certainly not.  It’s a lot to cope with.  I guess I’m just annoyed that the media gets to capitalize off of our tragedy and still rolls in town with no emotion, concern etc. for the students, faculty, and town people that were here firsthand.  Basically, we’re not Brangelina, a rare albino tiger, - to steal words - We Are Virginia Tech, a great university, not some side freakshow.  I’m not saying it isn’t important, to me it obviously is, but generally does the outside world care anymore?  I think most people have probably moved on by now, so go back to your newsrooms and let us start to do our healing in peace.

Welcome to My Blog!

So after some discussion with Evan at PKs last night, I’ve decided to stop blogging on MySpace and just blog on here instead.  I kind of like having a separate space to write versus writing and staring at people’s photos and picking songs and all that stuff.

Quick background info. in case you don’t know me:

I’m a recent graduate of Virginia Tech.  I have a Bachelor’s in English with a concentration in Creative Writing.  However, this blog will definitely not have goodest grammar punc.tu.ation, and sometimes even proper speling.  Apologies in advance.  I currently work as a server at a restaurant and will soon be starting to bartend.  So come get some drinks (can’t give any away ’cause it’s a restaurant), and enjoy my good company if you get bored.  Other than that, I like to write, read, drink, and hang out with my friends.  This is me!
